Using A Round Kitchen Table to Optimize Space

Posted on January 15th, 2011 in Kitchen Furniture, Tables | No Comments »

If you live in a small house that has smaller rooms, then you already know that your furniture can’t take up too much space. You want to be able to move around in your house without having to squeeze through narrow paths and around furniture. And small rooms can easily look cluttered if things are too large. That is one reason that those who live in smaller homes often opt for a round kitchen table sets. A round table takes up much less space, even with the chairs around it. It will help you to maximize the space in a small kitchen or dining area.

If you have babies or toddlers in your home, you might opt for a tall kitchen table. This will help them to avoid bumping their heads on the table corners. Taller tables can provide that classy bistro look and feel. And if you would rather, you can opt for an elegant oval kitchen table instead of a round one and still get the same space-saving benefits.

When you are out shopping for a new kitchen table, be sure to keep in mind the overall design of the room it will go in. Then you will be able to choose a table that will fit into the room nicely and complement the existing style. You don’t have to find an exact match, but items should still appear to fit together.

You might, for instance, choose a wood round kitchen table and chairs to go with your wood cabinets. If your kitchen has a more modern design, then you might think about getting a more modern table to match, such as something that’s glass and chrome. You should also get a table that matches your own tastes and your personal needs, such as comfort. Comfort is a big factor, especially when you are entertaining around the holidays. You want the table to be as inviting and comfortable as possible, so that everyone can concentrate on enjoying the company and the meal.

Repairing Your Kitchen Furniture

Posted on November 28th, 2010 in Kitchen Furniture | No Comments »

When compared with all of the other pieces of furniture in your household, your kitchen furniture is asked to stand up to the most pressure. Whether it’s your rolling kitchen trolley or your kitchen table set these items are often the most widely used furniture in any home. If you think about it, you are using that furniture at least three times a day on average and it is subject to constant temperature change, sharp objects resting on top of it, and flying food debris. That sort of barrage will inevitably wear down even the best-treated furniture pieces and so we must learn to repair it.

Personally, I’m not much of a handy man. If you are looking for an intricate guide on how to repair your wooden furniture on your own, you need to keep looking. Here is my three-step process for repairing my kitchen furniture whenever it breaks down or gets damaged (and that happens a lot when you have three little kids running around.)

Assess the Damages:

The first thing I always do is take a good look at the damage that’s been done and decide if I can live with it as it is. Whether it is a piece of freestanding kitchen furniture or built-in most of the time we’re talking about little scratches and dings that were made by utensils dropped or chairs bumping up against table legs. Those sort of minor problems I can live with but if the table is so wobbly that drinks get spilled regularly or the back of a chair is missing, that is cause for concern.

Look Up a Good Furniture Repair Man:

These days I have a regular guy that I bring my furniture to but you might not have that luxury so the next step is always to look someone up. The best ways to find a good local furniture repair place is to look online and in the yellow pages. I always like to start with the yellow pages and make my way to the Internet afterwards to read reviews. Google isn’t all encompassing just yet so the best repairmen might not show up in a normal query.

Shell Out the Dough:

The last part is the easiest unless you’re on a tight budget. Just bring your furniture to the repair guy, get an estimate, and then give him the cash when the work is adequately completed.

Posted on October 22nd, 2010 in Kitchen Furniture | No Comments »

You don’t buy any product for nothing (double negative, I know!) There has and always will be a reason behind your decision. Even with area rugs, you also have to make sure that you have reasons for buying one. If not, you will just waste your money and effort in buying these rugs. When it comes to your kitchen, the best area rugs that you have to go for should be the most useful one for you. As such, it is highly recommended that you go for machine washable kitchen rugs. Here are some compelling reasons for buying one;

  • Kitchen is actually where almost all the “actions” take place. Thus, when everyone is in the kitchen, there must really be something to be done. As a result, the kitchen turns out to be the dirtiest and messiest place of all. On top of that are rugs which will more or less look like garbage after the action is over. Now, if your rugs are not washable, you might just end up disposing them. However, if these rugs are washable, you need not to worry even if they get too dirty. With soap, water, and washing machine, it will look as good as new again.
  • Kitchen area rugs also have designs which are just perfect for kitchen use. You cannot settle for designs that are perfect for your living room and place it in your kitchen for it might get out of place. Thus, to be safe, give the kitchen the designs it deserves.
  • Finally, machine washable rugs are also very durable. In fact, these are among the most durable area rugs. Going back to the idea that the kitchen is the busiest and kitchen rugs are the most overused rugs, you need not to worry since it can certainly stand the pressure.

Now, do you realize why it is important to buy only these types of rugs for your kitchen? At least now, you know the purpose of buying these rugs.

The Varied Looks Found among Kitchen Bar Stools

When shopping for kitchen bar stools, it is the smart shopper who pays close attention to the height of the advertised item. Most manufacturers give their bar stools longer legs than the similar counter stools. However, some others have chosen to define a bar stool as something that should be shorter than a seat that goes at a kitchen’s counter, so checking height is a must.

While paying attention to the posted or printed information about a stool’s height, an experienced shopper anticipates the need to make a number of different decisions. For example, he or she needs to determine what sort of style would look best in the family’s food preparation area. Some tall seats have a country style; others reveal their link to a country in the Himalayas. Some are padded; others have a wooden seat.

Sometimes a stool’s details can give that piece a look of elegance. That is definitely the case whenever a type of seating contains a decided back section. That backrest could be one with a curved splat, or it could have wooden decorations, decorations that form a steam-bent “X.”

Still, the absence of a back does not limit the ability of craftsmen to fashion seating items with a variety of different styles. They might choose to make something with square legs, flared legs or splayed legs. They might decide to paint their wooden creation, or to provide it with a beautiful finish.

Once a homemaker has purchased a bar stool, she must decide whether or not to cover its top with a soft and colorful cushion. If a homemaker has chosen to cover her kitchen’s tall chairs with cushions, then she must determine the type of fabric that is to be used. Possible materials for such cushions would be velvet, linen and twill. Once the fabric type has been selected, then the shopper must decide between a solid colored, patterned, checkered or quilted cover.

As you can see there are many varied looks among bar stools for the kitchen with numerous styles, designs and materials used to fabricate them. This makes finding the perfect choice for any home a sure thing.

Three Kinds Of Kitchen Cabinets

Posted on September 3rd, 2010 in Kitchen Furniture | No Comments »

Choosing the right kitchen cabinets is important when the time comes to give your kitchen a new look or just to update some of the kitchen furniture. There are various options in choosing your new cabinetry.

It is important to control the cost of your kitchen remodeling project, and kitchen cabinets, which can use up to half of that budget, are one way to control the cost.  If you have a large budget, then custom kitchen cabinets may be the most beautiful choice, but they will also be the most expensive at around $300 to $1250 per lineal foot.  For less impact on the budget you might want to choose semi-custom.  For the least financial impact on the budget, the choose stock or ready-to-assemble kitchen cabinets.  These will run about $75 to $250 per lineal foot.  With such large differences in the cost of kitchen cabinets, you can see which the type you choose can have a large influence on the total cost of your project.

There are several options when deciding which kind of kitchen cabinets to install.  If money and time are no object, then custom made cabinets are an option.  These high quality cabinets are made by skilled craftsman and there may be a wait time of up to 6 to 12 weeks.  For stock cabinets, the wait time may be as low as 1 or 2 weeks.  Another option, if you’re handy, is to purchase “knock down” cabinets at a store, and assembling them yourself.

You may decide that custom kitchen cabinets would use too much of your kitchen remodeling budget, but you want cabinets of a certain design or style.  Another option exists.  You may choose semi-custom cabinets.  For this option you would choose what wood you want your new kitchen cabinets to be made from.  Then you decide on stain or color, and which hardware you want.  This puts the cost between custom made kitchen cabinets and stock cabinets.

The right supplier is an important part of getting kitchen cabinets you will be happy with.  One way to do this is to find a supplier who is a member of the KCMA or Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association.  This is a nonprofit organization of suppliers, designers, manufacturers and customers who are concerned with the quality and environmental impact of their products.  This is not the only such organization.  Finding a supplier who is a member of such an organization can help to ensure that you are getting the  kitchen cabinets you want, which will give you years of satisfaction.

Attributes of a Breakfast Nook

Posted on July 13th, 2010 in Kitchen Furniture | 2 Comments »

The term breakfast nook is used in two different ways: Some people use that phrase to refer to the room where you put breakfast nook furniture, whereas others use breakfast nook to refer to the furniture itself. No matter which way you use that phrase, there are some characteristics that make a breakfast nook unique.

If you are referring to the room then the location is important. The breakfast nook is generally located just off of the kitchen, and most of the time there are no walls separating the two rooms. The kitchen tends to flow into the breakfast nook so that it is sometimes hard to tell where one room stops and the other begins. Another characteristic of these rooms is that they often have a large number of windows. People like to enjoy natural sunlight in the morning especially. Scientists say that a dose of sunlight every day is healthy for both the mind and body. In some breakfast nooks you might not have a single wall without a window. Finally, breakfast nooks typically have a nook shape. For example, they might be open to the kitchen on one side and then have half of an octagon shape for the rest. Or, they could be a small square or rectangle that extends past the other walls of the house.

If you think of furniture when you hear the term breakfast nook then you are thinking about a breakfast nook set. Breakfast nook furniture on the surface might appear to be the same as dining furniture, but there are several differences. First, breakfast nook furniture is usually lighter in color and less ornate. You will find light woods like oak or pine rather than dark hard woods like cherry or mahogany. Second, breakfast tables must be easy to clean. Since you will be eating a majority of your meals at this table and most people do not use table linens in the kitchen, you are bound to get food on your breakfast table. It has to be easy to clean up. Another characteristic you will find in the kitchen nook set and not in dining room furniture is bench seating. Many breakfast nook furniture sets have benches instead of chairs or a combination of benches and chairs. The benches offer under the seat storage which is helpful in any kitchen. Corner breakfast nooks with storage are a great addition to any home. The benches also offer a larger pallet for decorating than chairs. Breakfast nook bench cushions are a great way to add color and texture to the room.

Organize Your Dishes with a Wooden Plate Rack

Posted on July 5th, 2010 in Accessories, Kitchen Furniture | No Comments »

When trying to get our kitchen and dining rooms more organized, sometimes the best solution is to create additional storage space. Using a wooden plate rack is one way to free up a little cabinet space while adding an attractive decorative element at the same time. Here is a look at some of the different options that we have and how a plate rack can help us get a bit more organized.

If you have more than one set of dishes in your kitchen you find yourself may be running out of places to put them all. Adding a stand-alone plate rack could be a good way to create some more storage space. You can purchase wooden plate racks that hold up to a whole set of dishes. Some of them even include hooks for cups underneath the plates. The wall plate racks do not take up any valuable counter or floor space, so they can be a very practical solution. If you do intend to store a lot of plates on a wall rack, make sure that the hanging hardware you are using will support the weight of the unit plus the dishes. Always screw into a wall stud or use anchor screws when hanging heavy items on the wall.

You may be in the market for a wooden plate rack in order to display just a few plates rather than to store an entire set of dishes. There are many beautiful wooden plate racks designed for this purpose as well. Elegant cherry or mahogany plate racks would fit nicely in both a modern and a traditional kitchen. Natural oak finishes or painted wood would be perfect for a country style kitchen. If you are the do-it-yourself type, either look for instructions for building a plate rack online or you could buy an unfinished wooden plate rack and paint or stain it yourself.

If you have enough cabinet space, you could also consider getting a wooden plate rack to fit inside a cabinet to store plates. Racks that store plates horizontally or standing upright are two options that are readily available in many different sizes. Most of these type of plate racks are expandable so you can custom fit them to your space.

Whatever you storage and display needs may be, there is a wooden plate rack that would help you get your kitchen a little more organized.

Can You Afford Oak Bar Stools?

Posted on April 8th, 2010 in Chairs, Kitchen Furniture, Office Furniture | No Comments »

Whether you own a bar, have a bar area in your home or simply want some bar stools to sit on in your kitchen (maybe you have a raised breakfast bar), you should always consider looking into getting some oak bar stools. That being said, there is rarely one universal best of anything, and oak bar stools are no different. What I mean by this is that there are several different types of oak bar stool on the market – each with its separate advantages and disadvantages that must be weighed up before buying.

In addition to this, the purpose for which you are buying wooden bar stools for must also be taken into account. For example, if you’re opening a large bar and have no bar furniture to begin with, it’s likely that you’ll require more oak bar stools than an average family would (some bars have well over a dozen stools in them). In this case, your budget would dictate exactly which oak stools are within your price range, since you can work out from this how much a set (or the amount that you require) of each type of stool will cost, and then which ones suit your budget and which ones don’t). The exact same principle can (and should) be applied when buying oak bar seats for your home. First work out how many stools you need for yourself and your family and then work out how much each type of stool will cost and filter out the ones that are above your budget.

Oak is one of the finest types of wood, and we are extremely lucky that there is such a large supply of it as it means that oak bar stools can be bought relatively cheaply. Many people admire oak because of its natural, grainy look that it has, and for the fact that it seems to match almost any kind of décor that you might have in your home. Naturally there are different shades of oak (either depending on where it came from or how it has been treated) but the principles remain the same.

Another advantage to using oak is that it is one of the toughest and most resilient woods out there, meaning your oak bar stools will last for absolutely ages. The benefits of this are obvious, and if you’re running a bar where lots of people continually move in and out, you need furniture that can stand the test of time.

The Versatility of Wooden Bar Stools

If you’re looking for bar stools (whether you’re actually starting your own bar or if you just want them for your home) you can do a lot worse than investing in a set of quality wooden bar stools. You’ll often hear people saying that wooden bar stools don’t have the same last-ability as other types (such as metal bar stools) but if they’re built in the right way there’s no reason why a wooden bar stool can’t last for over 30 years (providing they’re also looked after carefully). Remember that stools for bars have a tendency to be sat on a lot and that most people using them won’t look after them the same way as if they were their own, so they occasionally need to extra love and attention to keep them in top-notch condition.

When deciding what kind of wooden bar stools to get one of the big decisions to make is whether you want cushions on them or not. If you do want cushions on them, can get the ones that are built into the chair or the ones that you place on the chair yourself (that are usually tied on). The tie-on cushions work well because they can be easily removed so that you can wash them, but they do have a tendency to go missing in bars. The kind that can’t be removed, however, can also cause problems because they can’t be cleaned, meaning that any drinks that are spilt on them or stains that they pick up will remain on them forever.

Next you need to think about whether you want wooden swivel bar stools or stools that are rigid. The decision on this part is up to you. Swivel bar stools are better when you put them in a tight area where it might be hard to get out of (as you can swivel your way out) but they are more expensive than regular swivel bar stools (since most swivel stools are made from metal and because of the swivel mechanism).

Remember that you don’t need to run a bar or a restaurant to own wooden bar stools – I have a set of four in my home and my family and I love sitting around the breakfast bar in the morning since it feels like we’re eating out in a restaurant! Bar stools are great to have around the house and can really add an extra element to any party or outdoor barbeque. I like to move my cheap wooden bar stools outside (I keep the more expensive ones indoors so they don’t get ruined) when I have outdoor barbeques in the summer as they provide excellent seating for my guests.
