Finding And Using Carpet Remnants

Posted on January 2nd, 2011 in How To/Guides | No Comments »

Carpet remnants are either the remains of carpet after someone has had them removed from their home, after a contractor has excess carpet after building a house, or if a carpet or flooring store has excess or small pieces of carpet that cannot be  used to cover the entire floor of a room. Cheap carpet remnants are good for several things. First off if you have a small room or closet that you want to carpet you can purchase these small pieces of carpet to do the job you require without having to shoulder the expense of carpeting an entire room. Another use is for small area rugs or mats for children to sit on.

You can also use cheap carpet remnants if you are building or furnishing a playhouse for children. There are tons of uses for carpet remnants aside from simply carpeting a room. Often times you can get carpet remnants for free if you know someone that is having their carpets replaced or if you as someone that you see is having their carpets replaced. You can purchase carpet remnants in a variety of places as well.

Sometimes contractors or builders need to get rid of excess carpet and will sell it. You can also purchase it from people that paid for a certain square footage of carpet and then did not use it all. You can also get cheap carpet remnants directly from flooring or carpeting companies. When a flooring or carpeting company gets to the end of a roll of carpet and the piece left is not large enough to carpet an entire room they will often sell it for less than it would have been if you had been buying it per square foot to carpet an entire room. It is generally a good idea to purchase carpet remnants if you have to carpet a small area or if you simply need something to protect your floor for a lower cost than an entire carpeted room.

The very first thing you must do is to take old towels and place them over your stained carpet. Old towels are very good at extracting moisture from a saturated carpet.

The next step requires you to have a machine which is effective at absorbing liquids like, for instance, a vacuum cleaner. A machine of this nature helps you to get rid of moisture left over after using the old towels as absorbent materials. Continue vacuuming the carpet until you can no longer observe moisture rising from the carpet. Water carpet damage is best handled this way because no moisture should remain behind at all.

Proceed to lay out the carpet, which experienced water carpet damage across a rail or clothesline. The best time to do this is in when the sun is at its peak, not when there are humid conditions, so timing is important. It is at this time that you need to eliminate the smell that comes from carpet water damage. Shampoo is what you must clean the carpet with, after which you should spray at it with a high pressure hose. After doing so, you should then dry it out in the sun. Shampoo helps in eliminating bacteria, which forms on carpet surfaces over time.

Tips on Maintaining a Wall Air Conditioner

Posted on October 18th, 2010 in How To/Guides, Miscellaneous | No Comments »

As you sit in your home wondering why your house is so hot and humid, you might start to think that the extent of global warming has been under-estimated. Of course, you might be true in your assertions, but unfortunately, not completely. Sometimes homes become terribly hot or cold due to malfunctioning air conditioners. The malfunctioning of air conditioning devices is generally brought about by inadequate maintenance practices, as opposed to system failures. Failure to maintain your wall air conditioner will lead to regular faults and the shortening of your systems lifespan. Continue reading to find out more about how you can take care of your air con system!

Start by removing any living room chairs standing in the way and unplugging the air con as a way of avoiding unexpected electrocution. Once unplugged, remove the cover on the front to get hold of a filter, which is normally attached to the back or the front cover. However, with some systems this filter could be fastened in front of the coils. Now that you have accessed your filter, the next step incorporates removing the filter itself. Generally, most air con systems malfunction because of dirty filters that may be preventing air from flowing freely into the room.

With your filter removed, you can then take soap and warm water to wash it. A thorough wash is always the best as it rids you of the strain of having to carry out this procedure over and over again. After the filter has been washed thoroughly it will be wet, which is why you need to squeeze out the few remaining drops of water before letting your filter dry out. When your filter is dried out completely you can then reinstall it. However, if the filter is torn you will just have to get it replaced, as this could be the reason why it is not working properly.

This is not all there is to it, however. The covers-back and front-also have to be cleaned, plus of course the grill in front of the evaporator coils. If dirt is left to lie idle in such areas this could still affect the normal functioning of the wall air conditioner despite the filter having been cleaned thoroughly. In addition to cleaning the grill and the evaporator coils, you also have to vacuum the two. Take care not to bend the aluminum fins located close to the coils since they are very fragile indeed.

In addition to the aforementioned, cleaning the drain tube is also very important. With time these drain tubes tend to be blocked, with the result that the system will malfunction once again, clear blockages with a toothbrush or a piece of wire. With that done you can take a chlorine bleach to ensure that the tube is spick and span.

Manufacturers add colors to silvering glass to add flair and elegance to each piece whether they are used to make a statement or to make it appear like a place or reflection is disappearing.

A simple wall mirror can make an ambiance more interesting when it’s colored and if you are in the market looking for the right type of mirror for your hallway or your living room, gold wall mirrors may just be what you are looking for. Stair Assembly – The Easy Way

Posted on August 31st, 2010 in How To/Guides | No Comments »

Prefabricated stairs needs to be assembled once they arrive at the your place and the prefabricated kits come with a complete manual of handling the assembly. What is of prime importance is the ability of the person to fix the stairs with exact precision. Once the assembly is done it is difficult to make any changes since the wood stairs are nailed at joints and can not be altered later on, so it’s vitally important that you get everything right the first time around.

The first step to assembling a stair unit is mentally work through the procedure and than create a step by step approach (although this is usually provided in some kind of instruction manual). The initial step usually involves fixing the base frame of the assembly, since the base frame acts as a guide for rest of the assembly to take place. Since prefabricated stair kits have the treads and risers cut in actual size (as ordered) and the railings packaged in small units, it is very easy to attach things together without too much trouble.

I have done this myself several times, and believe me if you can understand the assembly manual, it is almost as easy as walking up and down the stairs themselves!

To start with, after fixing the base take up the risers and nail them to the main body of the staircase unit. Once the risers are done, a matching treads should be fixed, this should be done from bottom to top, as the end result accuracy increases. Now feel free to test the proper fitting if the treads and risers and than only assemble the hand railing, balusters and the stair stringers. Newel post should be taken before railing, as it designs the rest of the assembly.

Taking prefabricated exterior stairs for the assembly is also an easy task and in now way demands any extra precision or knowledge. This is far better than the technique of constructing stairs at the site and than seeking expert help on getting it fine tuned.

How To Install A Plasma Television Using A 42 Plasma Wall Bracket

Posted on April 30th, 2010 in How To/Guides | 1 Comment »

So you have your new 42 inch plasma television and a 42 inch plasma wall bracket, and you’re all set to get your TV mounted so you can start enjoying your viewing experience. Mounting any plasma television does not have to be hard, and you can manage this task without the help of a professional if you know what you are doing.

Here are some tips for how to install a plasma television using a 42-inch plasma wall bracket:

When it comes to installation, you may want to have a pair of extra hands around to help. If a friend or family member has the time to spare this will be a great favor. Televisions are quite heavy to begin with never mind one that is 42 inches!

To start mounting your TV you first need to decide where to hang it. The great thing about plasma televisions is you can literally hang them wherever you want. You could put one in the bathroom to watch while soaking in the tub, in the bedroom in the footboard so you can have it come out when you want to watch television and put away for romance at night, or anywhere else you want.

Next, make sure that you get the right type of bracket for the job. Once you have figured out where you plan to hang your TV you can choose the right bracket. The most important thing when choosing a TV wall bracket is that you must make sure that you get one that’s strong enough and that won’t collapse under the weight.

The tilting wall mounts work best if you hope to be able to turn the TV from side to side. If you are mounting it in a large room, where you need to get different views of the screen, this will be your best choice. The full-motion mount works by allowing you to turn the television all the way around and only need to be used for specific locations.

Studs should come with your mount and you use these to attach the mount to the wall. This is going to keep it supported and ensure it can hold the weight of the television. It is always better to add in a few extra studs just to be sure. Before attaching the mount drill holes for the mounting anchors. Attack the mount and lock the anchors down. Once you have done this you are finished and you can start watching your new television.
