A Look Into Garage Door Opener Parts

Garage doors are in some ways extremely tough and durable (due to the materials they’re made from), and in other ways they’re quite vulnerable, since they often need caring for and maintaining. Part of the reason for this is that it’s a big heavy item moving up and down along a track, so it’s easy to see why it can become slightly worn out over time (especially if you use it multiple times a day). For this reason, you might need to invest in some new garage door opener parts every now and then (either when they break or when they are starting to look worn).

The actual garage door mechanism is made up of a lot of different parts, despite actually being simpler than it looks. There are several different garage door opener parts that you might need to replace, right down from the actual door itself to the opening mechanism (if you have an electric door).

First of all you have the springs. Because these are under constant tension (especially when the door is closed) they are often the first things to go. Most garage doors have several different springs on them (for different jobs). Because of their tendency to need replacing, these garage door parts need regular checking and supervision.

Luckily garage door springs are easy to replace, and can be done by unhooking them once the door is open. You can get replacements from most large DIY shops (such as Lowes) for a very little amount.

For some homes (depending on where you live) the electrical garage door opener parts can be liabilities, especially if your home is likely to be struck by lightning. A large electrical surge can often blow the garage door opening system, and unfortunately these are often the most expensive thing to replace. If you garage door won’t open and you don’t know why, have you considered this option?

Along with this you have the general hinges of the door, but if you’re carefully and keep them oiled and in good condition the chances are you won’t ever have to replace them. The hardest part of maintaining these is remembering to do so (since all it takes is a quick inspection and a can of oil). Make a date in your calendar to do this every 6 months, since the time and hassle that it takes to replace them is not worth the time it takes in maintenance.

How to Replace Garage Door Rollers

If you’re one of the lucky people to have a garage on your house, you’ll no doubt have felt both the highs and lows of having a garage door on the front of it. Sometimes they can work great since they’re so easy to open, but at other times (if they break) they can be a pain to fix.

After a years of constant use, garage door rollers can become worn out and need replacing. Thankfully this isn’t as difficult as it first seems, and I’ll tell you exactly how to do it. You can always hire a handy man to do this job for you, but he’ll most likely charge you an unnecessarily high fee given the low difficulty of the job (that you can easily do yourself).

First of all, it’s important to note that no matter what kind of garage door rollers you get, they will always eventually wear out – no matter what they’re made from or how much care you take of them.

The first thing to note is the kind of garage door you have (providing it’s not an electrical one). Is it one that splits into sections as it moves up, or is it one solid piece that folds round? The types of rollers that you need are often different for both, so it’s important to know which is which.

In regards as to which garage door rollers you should buy, if you go into your local DIY shop and ask they’ll be able to give you the required information there.

Once you’ve got your door rollers, the appropriate tools and a step ladder, it’s time to take the door off. To do this, raise the door up, thus removing the tension from the attached springs, and clamp it up in place. Now take off all of the cables (you may need two people for this), take off the pulley system and the springs.

From here, gently lower the door down (you should use 3+ people for this to be safe) so that it’s on the floor again. From this point, you can take the old rollers out and replace them with the new ones. To do so, just unscrew/un-attach them from their space and attach the new ones in. They’re made to be ready straight out of the box, but there’s always a set of instructions with them in case you get stuck.
