Who Are Space-Saving Dining Sets Designed For?

Posted on March 21st, 2011 in Dining Room Furniture | No Comments »

Just about any situation that involves useable areas in the dining or kitchen settings are great times to consider down-sizing the dining room table and chairs, as these are not only the largest furniture items in a kitchen, but are also the biggest wastes of space when not being used.  Merely choosing a table and chairs set with two or three less chairs can open up quite a bit of space in any kitchen or dining room.

Smaller Sets

As mentioned above, cutting back on the number of pieces in the dining set is one of the simplest ways to free up some space, but this is not an option when it is the table itself that is taking up the space.  Luckily, there are clever designs from name brand manufacturers like Carolina Accents that not only make the best use of available space, but also come in the same stylish and contemporary designs as the larger styles.  Cheap dining table and chairs can still include taste and style by simply reducing the number of chairs and the size of the table.

Efficient Shapes

One of the best ideas to be applied to dining furnishings since the advent of those with additional leaves for expansion and reduction are the more efficient shapes that many table and chairs come in today.  Corner models and slim-line models, like the counter-height styles and island styles, to booth and wrap-around styles, not to mention the vast array of folding table and chairs, are now very common and available from many of the most recognized producers.

Parents

Kids’ rooms can be the most challenging to organize and keep floor space open in, but outlets like Direct-Buy and Toy-R-Us carry a range of solutions from folding table and chairs sets to whole-room packages including loft beds for kids and matching toy boxes.  These are some of the best tools a parent can employ, and can make getting kids to eat and getting them to eat where you want them to, much easier if they have their own fold-up dining sets.

Choosing Black Leather Dining Chairs

Posted on December 3rd, 2010 in Dining Room Furniture, Leather Furniture | 51 Comments »

Black leather dining chairs are a good option for your dining area at home. They can match to any kind of table and hence will look very attractive as a whole set. Leather furniture is always known for it’s durability, comfort level, design options, high quality and various colors. There are different types of dining chairs that include classic chairs, roll back chairs and the swivel club chair. The black dining chair is available in numerous styles also. Some of them are made of wood with a fabric or leather finish and steel with a leather finish.

Since the chairs are made of different kinds of leather they would require different maintenance procedures as well. The black dining chair can be easily damaged or scratches can be formed when in contact with sharp objects. So you need to keep away pets and children playing near them. So buy chairs that are made of durable leather that will not be damaged easily.

You should also check the type of leather used. If it is made of thick and tough leather then it may not be comfortable. Look for chairs that are made with leather soaked in colorless dyes i.e. treated leather. They are durable, of high quality and do not stain easily. In case there is a spill unexpectedly, you can just wipe it off using a dry cloth. This will keep the chair clean and dry and will also prevent it from staining.

Leather furniture needs careful maintaining procedures. There are different kinds of furniture made of leather like the swivel tub chair, the leather recliners, sofas, corner sofas etc. You can buy these chairs from your local stores or even get them from any of the online stores. So when you are in the market for black leather dining chairs you need to choose the leather carefully so that you will not be duped by paying for cheap or some low quality leather.

Tips For Buying A Dining Room Table

Posted on May 7th, 2010 in Dining Room Furniture, Tables | 3 Comments »

Buying a dining room table is not the kind of purchase we make every day. Thus, considering the expense and the rarity of the occasion it is a good idea to be well informed when setting out to the stores. Trends have changed and choices have greatly increased, so this article will give you some tips on what is available and how to make your decision.

Round, or square, with extensions or with drop leaves, with wood or glass tops or sometimes even plastic, all options are possible and they are all things that you must think about. In terms of materials there is no shortage of possibilities to furnish your dining room with. No longer are you stuck to buying a wood dining table, since you can get one made from whatever you like.

The materials you will end up selecting will probably be dependent on the style you have selected. If you opt for a traditional style then you will most likely be buying wood. If your table is going to be used a lot, then you want a durable and very easy to clean material. Large families tend to be rougher on tables more than couples do, so wood and metal are very good materials if that sounds like your family. Consider also formica; it can take a beating, it’s inexpensive and so retro! Use a glass top table only if your table will be use by careful people, preferably without kids.

Besides the materials, another important consideration is the size. It is actually the most important determining factor since you use a table that is too big for the room (no matter how hard you try). In a small space it is not necessary to bother yourself with a large table top – it is better to buy a table with additional leaves that you can store away, and only bring out on the special days when a large number has to be seated. Remember that you need to plan on about 24 inches of space for each person at the table.

The Benefits of Oak Dining Chairs

Posted on April 30th, 2010 in Chairs, Dining Room Furniture, Oak Furniture | 5 Comments »

For me, oak dining chairs are the best kind of dining chairs. This opinion isn’t based on any kind of sentiment or biased opinion – it’s based on facts and general observations (and common consent). When buying oak dining room furniture (and oak dining room chairs) you are making a statement – to yourself, to your family, to your friends and to your home. You’re telling them that you’re serious about the state of your dining room and that what you have bought is here to stay (i.e. it’s a long term investment).

You’ve done this because you’ve bought oak dining chairs that are both comfortable as well as great looking (hopefully anyway – most oak furniture combines these two things). What is and isn’t good looking is, after all a matter of opinion. The great thing about oak wood though is that it is so versatile that it can be made into any style of chair with any pattern or colour on it. In terms of making a dining chair it is the ultimate foundation.

“Buy lots of materials – like plastic – can do that” I hear you cry. While that is true, plastic neither has the strength nor the durability to last as long as most oak dining chairs. One of the main selling points of oak dining furniture is that it is incredibly tough and long lasting. Just think about the grand oak tree for example; these things last for hundreds of years and don’t let anything stand in their way. This means that longevity is built into their DNA, and that is just what you want when building furniture.

The main thing that turns most people off of buying oak dining chairs is that they cost a little more than most other kinds (even than most other chairs made from different kinds of wood). With this extra cost, however, comes value. These chairs are made to a higher standard from higher quality materials and that is why they cost more.

Another benefit of oak dining chairs (as with an oak dining table) is that they can be made in such a way that they are 100% completely environmentally friendly. The way this works is that as one oak tree is cut down two more are planted. Forests are sectioned off and worked through in circulation so that there’s always a strong and healthy supply of oak trees growing. Then, when you’re done with your oak furniture you can either pass it on or recycle it (since it’s wood it will naturally recycle itself). Compare this with plastics that will up landfill sites and the choice is an easy one.

The Benefits of a Folding Dining Table

Posted on April 21st, 2010 in Dining Room Furniture, Tables | No Comments »

If you own or live in a small apartment or flat than a folding dining table is the ideal piece of furniture for you. Note that while I refer to them as ‘folding dining tables’ in this article many other people also call them ‘convertible sets’ or ‘convertible dining sets’ due to the fact that they convert (much like a Transformer!)

The main benefit of a folding dining table is that it can be used like an ordinary table and then folded and stored away when it is not needed. They are designed in such a way that they can often be folded up and stored in the smallest of places, making them ideal for anyone that is limited on space in their home. Note that while it’s more common to find a square dining table that folds up, finding a folding round dining table isn’t beyond the realms of possibility; it’s just more of a rarity.

Typically folding dining room tables are made from either wood or metal, and each has its own strengths and weaknesses. For example, wooden tables are much nicer to dine on, are more traditional looking and look nice inside a living room. On the other hand, metal tables are much more durable, will last longer and can be used outside but they don’t usually look half as nice and I can’t imagine using one as my main dining room table in my home.

This is not necessarily a bad thing, however, since many people consider their folding dining table to be an optional extra for when they have extra guests come round and they need extra room to put things on (such as when they have a party). The rest of the time their folding table is kept upstairs in the spare bedroom and out of reach.

Other times when folding dining tables are useful is for people that have just bought or moved into a new apartment and don’t have a lot of room to play with (such as newlyweds). In the current financial market buying a house is nearly impossible to do without going bankrupt so by the time most people have one they have no money left for a fancy dining room set, and often times the property that they have bought only has room for a folding dining table. The great thing about a round folding dining table is that you can get it out and set it up when you’re about to have lunch or dinner and then fold it up and store it away afterwards so that you can use the space for other things.

Glass Top Dining Table – How to Care For It

Posted on April 19th, 2010 in Dining Room Furniture, Tables | 4 Comments »

If you’re looking for a unique and special kind of look for your dining room, than a glass top dining table might be just the very thing you’re looking for. Most of you will have only ever seen and used wooden dining tables, but all that is changing as glass dining tables become cheaper and more accessible than ever.

Perhaps the most exciting thing to consider when buying a glass top dining room table is that you don’t just have to use plain old see-through glass (like you have on your windows). In fact, you can have all sorts – like cloudy glass or glass with custom made patterns in there (which can look absolutely amazing). In fact, a friend of mine had their oval glass top dining table customized so that they had the names of each family member engraved around the table (much like how you’d set out place mats at a wedding). Note that you should not take this process lightly and you should only ever let someone engrave your table if they are an expert and have adequate experience.

Part of the beauty of having a contemporary glass top dining table is that you don’t have to use a table cloth (as you do with most wooden tables), meaning you can let  the true nature of the glass shine through and sparkle.

It seems that the main problem with owning a glass top dining table is trying to keep it clean from all the marks that it seems to pick up. So what’s the best way to keep your glass top dining table clean and smear free?

First of all, use coasters and place mats for everything. Never place a drink down on there without first having a coaster under it and never place a plate or bowl down without using a place mat. This should stop 90% of smears and marks outright.

Now, if you still find you have the occasional mark on your glass dining table you should find an old newspaper and gently rub the mark off. The reason that a newspaper works better than paper towels is because they don’t have any lint in them (which can leave behind trails and marks) meaning you get a clean and smooth wipe. In addition to this, cleaning a glass top dining table with a newspaper is a very eco-friendly thing to do since you’re essentially recycling old paper that you would be throwing away instead of using another paper towel.

The Benefits of an Extending Dining Table

Posted on April 17th, 2010 in Dining Room Furniture, Tables | 2 Comments »

Having an extending dining table in your home is a great way to turn an ordinary dining room into something versatile and special. Because in some homes it is not always realistic to have a dining that is big enough for the whole family, having an extendable dining table is the answer. The main benefit of an extending table is that it can provide you with space (in your dining room) as well as the option to extend and to seat more people.

If you have no idea what an extending dining table is, it is basically a medium sized table that can seat 6-8 people at most, but that can extend to seat a further few people. The extension process is done by pull an extra piece of wood out from under the table (they are designed in such a way so that the wooded surface can slide out easily) which then becomes an extra part of the extending dinner table’s top.

The kinds of homes where an extending dining table would be most useful are ones where there is maybe 4-5 family members living there (meaning they can fit round an ordinary dining table without any problems) but that frequently have other family members and relatives over for dinner. For these kinds of people having a table that was big enough for everyone would be a waste of space (most of the time), since it would only get properly used when those other relatives visited. In this case, an extending dining table is perfect for them!

There are many different styles and designs of extending dining tables – some extend at only one end, some at both ends, some have legs that swing back and forth to allow the extension to be done (and to support the extension) and so on.

As with most dining tables, it is not uncommon to find extending dining tables made from all different kinds of woods (such as oak, mahogany, teak and beach) and materials (such as an extending glass dining table). This gives you a lot of variety and choice to choose from, and means that you can find a table that fits in with the rest of your home and the look that you like.

Note that when using an extending dining room table it is handy to have two different table clothes – one that is big enough for when it is extended and one that fits it when it is retracted. It’s important to look after your table, and there’s no point using a table cloth if the ends of the table aren’t covered properly.

How to Choose an Oak Dining Table

Posted on April 12th, 2010 in Dining Room Furniture, Oak Furniture, Tables | 2 Comments »

Shopping for an oak dining table can be an overwhelming and daunting process since there is often so much choice that you be left feeling confused. Fortunately, there are some ways that you can (and should) narrow down the list of choices until you have just a few left (at which point you can choose your favourite).

The first thing you need to think about is where your solid oak dining table is going to go in your home (you probably know this already). Chances are it’ll be in your dining room itself, so you need to go and measure your dining room’s dimensions so that you know what kind of sized space you’re working with. There’s no point going out and blindly buying an oak wood dining table and then hoping it fits! The next questions to ask yourself is ‘how many people does this wood dining table have to seat?’ This is just as important as the previous question, and will help you decide whether you need to buy just a cheap dining table or an entire dining room set (with chairs and all).

Next (and perhaps most importantly for some people) we have to think about our budget (i.e. how much you have to spend) and how much we are prepared to pay (i.e. how much you actually WANT to spend). For many people this is not a set number, but a range. For example, you might have a number that you don’t want to go past, but if an amazing super-nice table comes along you are prepared to spend a little bit more to take it home.

So you have a brief idea of what you’re after. Now let’s go out there and try to find all of the oak dining tables on the market that fit our specifications.

From then on it’s just about narrowing it down to the particular styles that you like, and the styles that will fit in with the rest of the look of your home. Another good thing to do is to sit down at each dining table (if possible) and get a feel for how comfortable it is and whether it ‘feels right’. This is very much an intuitive and personal thing, and is something that should not be over look (again, if possible – you can’t do this if you’re buying oak dining tables online). If you’ve follow the advice above hopefully by now you’re enjoying your meals at a beautiful oak dining room table with your family!

How to Care for a Solid Oak Dining Table

Posted on April 12th, 2010 in Dining Room Furniture, Oak Furniture, Tables | 8 Comments »

Imagine you’ve just bought an oak dining table (or perhaps you actually just have). No doubt you see this fine piece of dining room furniture as an investment that will stay in your family and household for a long time. Do you know how to care for it and how to keep it looking like new for years to come? If not, read on…

Solid oak dining tables can dominate a room and impose its magnificent presence upon all those who enter it. The only problem with a solid oak dining table (and most other wooden tables) is that they require occasional care and attention to keep them fresh and healthy (unlike plastic or metal which only require cleaning).

While you might not realize it, the most deadly (and unexpected) killers of your solid oak dining table is heat and warm air (i.e. humidity). The effects of this on your dining room table are that it will start to crack and become disjointed. It may also cause your table to look slightly more pale than usual.

This shouldn’t be a problem as long as your home is air conditioned (you want to have your dining room constantly at around 65-75 degrees). Dealing with low humidity is a slightly harder problem (as this is the real stealth killer). If you feel like your wooden dining room table may be suffering go out and buy a humidifier machine which sprays out water into the air and leaves the room feeling fresh.

While it may not be always possible for some people, try to keep your solid oak dining table in the shade as much as you can, since exposure to direct sunlight will wear it down (and fade the colouring) over time.

In addition to this, be sure to keep your solid oak dining table clean from dirt and grime (this can be done by regularly running a damp cloth over it) and from dust (which can be removed via a duster or with static towels). Many people think that dust on their dining table is nothing to worry about, but that dust attracts bacteria that can quickly get to work eating into your precious table. Above all remember that whenever cleaning your oak table that you wipe it dry, since surface moisture can cause long term problems.

Doing these things will give you the best chance of keeping your solid oak dining table in good condition, and will put you well ahead of 99% of other people who aren’t as clued up on looking after dining room furniture.

Buying a Square Dining Table

Posted on April 10th, 2010 in Dining Room Furniture, Tables | 5 Comments »

One of my most favourite pieces of furniture in my home is my square dining table. Many people tell me I was lucky to get such a fine dining room table at such a good price, but was it really luck? The truth is that this was not the first dining room table that I looked at (in fact I looked at almost 50). While this did take a while, I always had a vision of what I wanted (and I was determined to get value for money) so it was well worth it.

If you too are looking for the perfect square dining table set for your home you must be prepared to go through this, but the good news for you is that it’s now easier than ever to find the right square dining table for you thanks to the magic of the internet and the fact that you can now look at hundreds of different pieces of furniture all at the touch of a button (whereas in the old days you’d have to collect catalogues and trawl around furniture stores). So what do you need to look for when browsing? There are a few key things you need to keep your eyes open for when looking for a quality square dining table:

  1. Take the time to sit down at the table you’re looking at get a feel for how comfortable it is and whether it’s the right height for you (taking into account the chair you’re sitting on).
  2. Next, check to see if the square dining room table is solid and whether it feels stable or not. To test this, give it a bit of a shake (nothing too hard) to see if it wobbles at all. Avoid tables that squeak loudly or that move about too much.
  3. If the dining tables you’re looking at are second hand be ruthless about checking their condition. Imagine you’re buying a second hand car instead of a table. Look around it for any major scratches or signs of wear and tear. Look to see if there are any obvious glue marks or screw holes where pieces have come off and had to be put back on, since this indicates a sign of weakness in square dining tables.
  4. Don’t get overly emotionally attached to any table until you’ve done all of these checks or you could be in for a disappointment.
