Do You Need a Wood Writing Desk?

Posted on January 16th, 2011 in Desks, Wooden Furniture | No Comments »

Writing desks are fantastic pieces of furniture that are not only very functional, but also stylish.  While many people have gone for the cheap desks made of fiberboard and fake wood and other Wal-Mart quality crud, many people still believe in spending the extra money to get a really solid and excellent wooden writing desk.  It’s not hard to see why this is, as traditional desks that are made the old fashioned way tend to last longer, can take much more of a beating, and look more impressive than one of the new cheap models that might be designed to “look nice” but still have that fake look on the surface that doesn’t stand up against their natural wood counterparts.

There is a wide array of opinions when it comes to which one is best, and it’s hard to figure out because everyone’s measuring stick is going to be different.  Writing desks made out of cherry and cedar, for example, are going to be beautiful, have a dark deep color, and also be a lot more expensive.  Oak desks are going to be extremely heavy and last virtually forever, while desks made of pine will be cheaper and lighter, and take paint well.

The matter of taste also makes a big difference.  Cherry writing desks are often among the most popular as they are naturally beautiful and durable while much cheaper than the high end timbers like mahogany, which can run an absolute fortune to make an entire writing desk out of.

There are many options when it comes to finding the perfect writing desk, and each individual is going to need to have a solid understanding of what they personally prefer as far as style, look, and function in order to get their ideal fit in office furniture.  Don’t hesitate – think about your favorite writing desk style and get one that suits your office or home!

Antique Desk Basic Information

Posted on October 20th, 2010 in Antique Furniture, Desks | No Comments »

There are a variety of reasons why people like (and collect) antique furniture. Antiques are generally properly made, since they have managed to survive a century or more. They have a unique look, both in design and materials, that some people enjoy. And of course antique pieces have history, which lends a certain weight to the room they are in. An antique desk is no exception to these qualities, and will often have a stately appearance in an office which many appreciate.

How old must a desk be before it can be called an antique? That answer varies depending on who you ask. Although the general rule is that a piece must be at least 100 years old, other factors can also play a part, including the quality, style, and overall rarity. Depending on what you consider to be the most important characteristics, you may want a desk that is an antique in all senses of the word, or just in the ways that suit your design needs. Regardless, it is essential to choose a desk that is of good quality.

Buying an antique desk is an expensive venture. The price for a desk can vary, and there are some specific factors that will influence the cost. The quality of a desk, the materials it is made with, its design, and when it was made will all help to determine how much it costs. Mahogany and similar woods will cost more, and size is also a factor. In purchasing a desk from a store there is a chance you could negotiate for a better price. Auctions, either traditional or online, are also a consideration, and you might find a desk for a lower price than most stores.

You can find antique desks at your local antique stores, through auctions, or online. Local dealers can probably let you know about auctions in the area. Buying antique furniture online can be risky, but if you only buy from reputable sources you can often save money that way.

Different Styles of Glass Computer Desks

Posted on July 28th, 2010 in Desks | 3 Comments »

A glass computer desk is a way to give your home office a contemporary look. The concept has evolved from old wooden desk that used to be merely covered with a glass top. The great thing about this was that the user could places mugs or beverage glasses on top without having to worry about the stains and marks they might leave on the often expensive desks. Now this concept has been extended to desks whose main composition is glass.

Another great thing about such desks is that the smooth texture of glass means that they are relatively easy to clean when compared to wooden surfaces, as well as being durable. Of course glass can always still be susceptible to scratches and even breakage too.

As with other desks, they come in different shapes and sizes that can match the particular measurements of your room. Some of them have a corner desk design so as to economize on space. This creates more room to fit in other furnishings such as shelves, chairs and drawers. For those who have a bit more money to spend, there is always the option to custom order your glass computer desk design. This could be particularly useful if your room is of some weird or awkward geometric design. In addition, you may have a requirement for a particular number of drawers or other accessories.

Although made of glass, such desks can also come in different shades or levels of transparency. For example, a smoky finish is particularly popular, whilst you can also get a black glass computer desk. However, even if you go for the pure transparent effort, the great thing is that this provides the versatility to match with the other furnishings in your room. Pretty much any colour scheme or decoration can match with transparent glass. If you want, you could even decorate the glass desk with coloured placemats or tablecloths or other portable decorative pieces.

As you can see, glass computer desks provide a great deal of flexibility, more so if your budget allows a bespoke option. It’s no wonder that they are increasing in popularity.

The Pine Desk: An Attractive Addition to Your Home

Posted on April 29th, 2010 in Desks, Wooden Furniture | 5 Comments »

Pine writing desks can be a great alternative to those cheap fiberboard desks that are available in discount stores, and most major office furniture stores are starting to carry them. Although these types of desks are inexpensive and practical, fiberboard doesn’t last and they often end up having to be replaced every few years. On the other hand, pine writing desks may not be the same quality as cedar or mahogany, they are an attractive and inexpensive option to fiberboard.

Pine is often considered a second-rate wood, and while this is true to a certain extent, a writing desk made of good quality pine will certainly outlast any type of faux wood or fiberboard desk. There’s no comparison. Considering real wood is always preferable to imitation wood, a good pine writing desk is a great way to balance between the more expensive high quality wood, and the cheap fiberboard desks that won’t stand up to everyday wear and tear.

Pine desks are well constructed and durable, and make an attractive choice for a home office. As long as they are taken care of, a pine desk will outlast any of of the cheaper fiberboard alternatives. Pine may not last quite as long as oak, but it’s also not as heavy as oak. If you go to furniture auctions you will often find many antique pine desks which is testament to the fact that they are durable and will last for many years when looked after in the correct manner.

Take some time to price shop the many different models that are available. There are some excellent deals out there if you’re willing to look around a little. You may even be able to bargain for a better price since pine desks are usually less in demand that the more popular woods.

With a little time and effort your research will pay off and you’ll be the proud owner of a beautiful pine desk for your home office.

Roll Top Desks for the Home & Office

Posted on April 16th, 2010 in Desks | 2 Comments »

Are you looking for a new desk for your home or office? If so, have you ever considered roll top desks? The fact is that roll top desks will revolutionize most people’s office or computer spaces due to their intuitive design and safety mechanisms.

Despite actually being quite an old style of desk (they have been around for hundreds of years) they ‘seem’ new and like a modern desk to most people simply because they are so rarely used and underappreciated.

The first time you see a roll top desk you might find yourself overwhelmed (as I did – in fact I thought I’d seen one of the most modern desks ever!) due to the sheer size and complexity of it. These home office desks have everything you need in terms of storage capacity, and can hold every kind of things that you’d want to store in a desk due to the assortment of drawers and storage areas that it has.

A typical oak roll top desks (let’s face it, oak is the best kind of wood) will have two large sets of drawers down either side and you will sit in the middle with your legs between the two. It will also have a back section with mini shelves for storing things on (such as pencils) and some other mini drawers on the top as well as a large flat space for you to work on. These desks are usually pretty heavy duty and are not something to be scoffed at! The best part about a rolling top desks is the way that you can roll the top down (hence the name) and close it up and lock it so that you can keep your work private and safe.

When buying a roll top desk for the first time there’s a couple of things that you really need to know:

Firstly, roll top desks are HUGE! You might have seen some pictures of them and thought ‘woah that looks pretty big!’ Well you were right! These home office desks are hard enough to get to your home (or office), so you don’t want to have to have the trouble of finding a way to return it if it doesn’t fit your workspace. Secondly, don’t underestimate the size of them, and never, ever buy one without ensuring that you have the room in your home to store it (or if you don’t have the room, move things around until you do have the room for one).

Looking to Buy a Glass Computer Desk?

Posted on April 3rd, 2010 in Desks | 1 Comment »

In our world today by far the most important item that most people possess (at home and at work) is their computer. But it is not just the computer that has changed the way that we work (through the evolution of technology), it is also the computer desks that we work on. For some people the glass computer desk is the absolute pinnacle of this, and I’ll explain why…

A nice looking glass computer desk is a almost like a work of art. There are many different styles that you can get, but the main similarity between them (whether it is a standard desks or a glass corner computer desk) is that they have a large glass surface which you work on (and which your monitor rests on). Most glass corner computer desks are made from a metal frame that supports that glass segments. They are extremely popular these days because of their relatively low price and because they look ultra modern and sophisticated.

Not every metal glass computer desk is the same size, and just like with any other kind of desk you need to have a good idea of the size that you require (by looking and measuring the size of your home space or office) before buying. These desks do come in different sizes, so make sure you get the right size for you. Taking a glass computer desk back to the shop is a difficult process, since you usually have to build them out of the box. This means that to take it back you’ll have to disassemble it, and some shops won’t allow you to take back a glass computer desk once it’s already been built (especially if you have to drill in screw holes).

There are many different kinds of glass and metal computer desk that you can get, so take the time to look online to find a style that suits you. You can aid this process by thinking about what it is exactly that you need your computer desk to help you with. For example, does it need to hold a full tower PC, or just a laptop? Do you have a large monitor? Does it need to hold a printer or a scanner? Do you need a large area for writing? Do you need a pullout draw for your keyboard and mouse? These are all questions that you should answer before shopping for a modern glass computer desk, as doing so will help you determine exactly what you need.

How Writing Desks Can Increase Your Productivity

Posted on April 2nd, 2010 in Desks | 1 Comment »

Even if writing is just a hobby for you, the thing that will make the most difference to your writing (even more than any pens or paper that you could buy) are using writing desks to write on.

The reason writing desks are so much better than ordinary office desks (or computer desks) is that they give you more physical space to work in. This extra space means that you can lay out all of your work at the same time and be able to see it all and read from it all at once. I find that spreading all of my work out lets my mind open up and I become much more creative and calm (since working in small spaces aggravates me).

A good writer is someone who will have multiple pages of notes (often around several different things depending on what they’re writing about) as well as several pages that they are writing. This is a lot of different pieces of paper to have at once, and working on a modern writing desk where you’re constantly having to re-organise and this paper is frustrating and is bad for productivity. Note that you don’t need to be writing a novel to make the most of office writing desks since any work that you do by hand will benefit from given more space. I have a friend who paints model airplanes and loves the space that his desk gives him (he actually looked at cheap writing desks because he didn’t want to spill paint on a nice one).

There are a few things that you should look into when buying writing desks for the first time. First of all, think about whether you want a pre-made area to keep your pens and pencils (and other stationary equipment). Pencil holders can be bought cheaply (or made easily) so this is not an essential part of the desk. An essential part of a writing desk, however, is the draw and storage space that it offers. Look for desks with drawers either down the side (i.e. by the legs) or above so that they main flat surface is left untouched.

One of the most commonly made mistakes that people make when looking at writing desks is that they don’t consider the height of them in relation to themselves. Since you’ll be spending a lot of time sitting behind this desk you want to get one that’s a suitable height for you, since spending hours sitting behind a desk that is too small is bad for your posture.

What is an L Shaped Computer Desk?

Posted on March 31st, 2010 in Desks, Office Furniture | 10 Comments »

If you’re looking to buy a new desk for your home, office, bedroom (or wherever there’s a spare corner) look no further than getting an L shaped computer desk (also known as a corner computer desk). So what is an L shaped desk? It’s a desk that is fairly triangular in shape, where the top point of the triangle fits into the corner of your room, leaving you sitting facing the corner.

There are two main benefits to having an L shaped computer desk over an ‘ordinary’ computer desk (i.e. the kind that are rectangular shaped). The first of these is that you get the benefit of being able to fit it directly into the corner (because of the triangular shape and the right angle of it). This can often free up space in a room where that corner space might otherwise be wasted. The second benefit is that you can often actually have a bigger computer desk to work on without taking up any extra space in the room.

I personally love working on my L shaped computer desk because I sit in the middle (with my computer monitor, keyboard and mouse in the middle) and have space either side (to my left and right) on my corner computer desk with which to work in (I do a lot of manual handwriting whilst I’m on my computer so this additional space is perfect for that). Not having to constantly put books and papers away to clear space is such a time saver, and means that I can lay everything out how I want it, meaning I’m far more efficient and effective when I’m working.

Another, slightly unusual benefit of using an L shaped office desk is that because you’re primarily facing the corner of a wall, you’ll have far less distractions and you’ll be able to see far less going on around you. In some places this can really help to keep you focused, and is a good way of helping people to feel like they’re in their own mini-office (when they really aren’t).

When using L shaped computer desks in large offices you be less likely to have them in the corner of the room (since you might have dozens of employees all working in the same office but only 4 corners to the room). You can still make good use of a L shaped computer desk in this situation, and they can actually still be extremely useful in small areas where space is limited and desks have to fit into whatever space is available.
