The Benefits of Oak Dining Chairs

Posted on April 30th, 2010 in Chairs, Dining Room Furniture, Oak Furniture | 5 Comments »

For me, oak dining chairs are the best kind of dining chairs. This opinion isn’t based on any kind of sentiment or biased opinion – it’s based on facts and general observations (and common consent). When buying oak dining room furniture (and oak dining room chairs) you are making a statement – to yourself, to your family, to your friends and to your home. You’re telling them that you’re serious about the state of your dining room and that what you have bought is here to stay (i.e. it’s a long term investment).

You’ve done this because you’ve bought oak dining chairs that are both comfortable as well as great looking (hopefully anyway – most oak furniture combines these two things). What is and isn’t good looking is, after all a matter of opinion. The great thing about oak wood though is that it is so versatile that it can be made into any style of chair with any pattern or colour on it. In terms of making a dining chair it is the ultimate foundation.

“Buy lots of materials – like plastic – can do that” I hear you cry. While that is true, plastic neither has the strength nor the durability to last as long as most oak dining chairs. One of the main selling points of oak dining furniture is that it is incredibly tough and long lasting. Just think about the grand oak tree for example; these things last for hundreds of years and don’t let anything stand in their way. This means that longevity is built into their DNA, and that is just what you want when building furniture.

The main thing that turns most people off of buying oak dining chairs is that they cost a little more than most other kinds (even than most other chairs made from different kinds of wood). With this extra cost, however, comes value. These chairs are made to a higher standard from higher quality materials and that is why they cost more.

Another benefit of oak dining chairs (as with an oak dining table) is that they can be made in such a way that they are 100% completely environmentally friendly. The way this works is that as one oak tree is cut down two more are planted. Forests are sectioned off and worked through in circulation so that there’s always a strong and healthy supply of oak trees growing. Then, when you’re done with your oak furniture you can either pass it on or recycle it (since it’s wood it will naturally recycle itself). Compare this with plastics that will up landfill sites and the choice is an easy one.

How To Install A Plasma Television Using A 42 Plasma Wall Bracket

Posted on April 30th, 2010 in How To/Guides | 1 Comment »

So you have your new 42 inch plasma television and a 42 inch plasma wall bracket, and you’re all set to get your TV mounted so you can start enjoying your viewing experience. Mounting any plasma television does not have to be hard, and you can manage this task without the help of a professional if you know what you are doing.

Here are some tips for how to install a plasma television using a 42-inch plasma wall bracket:

When it comes to installation, you may want to have a pair of extra hands around to help. If a friend or family member has the time to spare this will be a great favor. Televisions are quite heavy to begin with never mind one that is 42 inches!

To start mounting your TV you first need to decide where to hang it. The great thing about plasma televisions is you can literally hang them wherever you want. You could put one in the bathroom to watch while soaking in the tub, in the bedroom in the footboard so you can have it come out when you want to watch television and put away for romance at night, or anywhere else you want.

Next, make sure that you get the right type of bracket for the job. Once you have figured out where you plan to hang your TV you can choose the right bracket. The most important thing when choosing a TV wall bracket is that you must make sure that you get one that’s strong enough and that won’t collapse under the weight.

The tilting wall mounts work best if you hope to be able to turn the TV from side to side. If you are mounting it in a large room, where you need to get different views of the screen, this will be your best choice. The full-motion mount works by allowing you to turn the television all the way around and only need to be used for specific locations.

Studs should come with your mount and you use these to attach the mount to the wall. This is going to keep it supported and ensure it can hold the weight of the television. It is always better to add in a few extra studs just to be sure. Before attaching the mount drill holes for the mounting anchors. Attack the mount and lock the anchors down. Once you have done this you are finished and you can start watching your new television.

How Quality Waiting Room Chairs Will Improve Your Workspace

Posted on April 29th, 2010 in Chairs, Office Furniture | 2 Comments »

If your company or place of work has a waiting room that sees a lot of children pass through it (perhaps you work in a dentist or a doctors surgery) you’ll already know the importance of having waiting room chairs that children can sit on (and can enjoy sitting on) as well as having a general area that they can entertain themselves in.

While I do believe children are amazing and while I love their vibrancy and youthful energy the idea of a waiting room (i.e. a place where people sit still and be quiet until they’re seen) is not something that mixes well with most children.

I have designed and created a few waiting rooms in my time, and I found that having a mixture of waiting room chairs was one of the keys to creating a happy place. For example, I have some office waiting room chairs for the adults (or the parents) as well as some smaller waiting area chairs that are designed for young children and infants. The reason this works is because it makes them feel like that area is for them and not just for adults and it gives them an sense of responsibility.

In addition to having these extra waiting room chairs I also found that having things for kids to play with and be stimulated and entertained by was a great way to keep them occupied for the short time while they have to wait. You might have already been in a doctors waiting area where there are lots of children’s books laid out (for their parents to read to them) and toys for them to play with.

This is a great start, but I also recommend having a separate area (such as in the corner of the room) away from their waiting room chair where they can interact with other children and play together. In areas such as this I found that waiting room chairs blocked up the space, so I decided to have a plain carpeted section with building blocks (and other related toys – like Lego) for children to play with. An added benefit of this area is that parents can leave their children here under the supervision of the receptionist while they go in and see the dentist or doctor.

If you’re operating on a tight budget and you don’t think you can afford any of this you can always find some used waiting room chairs either online, at an auction or at a discount furniture shop.

The Pine Desk: An Attractive Addition to Your Home

Posted on April 29th, 2010 in Desks, Wooden Furniture | 5 Comments »

Pine writing desks can be a great alternative to those cheap fiberboard desks that are available in discount stores, and most major office furniture stores are starting to carry them. Although these types of desks are inexpensive and practical, fiberboard doesn’t last and they often end up having to be replaced every few years. On the other hand, pine writing desks may not be the same quality as cedar or mahogany, they are an attractive and inexpensive option to fiberboard.

Pine is often considered a second-rate wood, and while this is true to a certain extent, a writing desk made of good quality pine will certainly outlast any type of faux wood or fiberboard desk. There’s no comparison. Considering real wood is always preferable to imitation wood, a good pine writing desk is a great way to balance between the more expensive high quality wood, and the cheap fiberboard desks that won’t stand up to everyday wear and tear.

Pine desks are well constructed and durable, and make an attractive choice for a home office. As long as they are taken care of, a pine desk will outlast any of of the cheaper fiberboard alternatives. Pine may not last quite as long as oak, but it’s also not as heavy as oak. If you go to furniture auctions you will often find many antique pine desks which is testament to the fact that they are durable and will last for many years when looked after in the correct manner.

Take some time to price shop the many different models that are available. There are some excellent deals out there if you’re willing to look around a little. You may even be able to bargain for a better price since pine desks are usually less in demand that the more popular woods.

With a little time and effort your research will pay off and you’ll be the proud owner of a beautiful pine desk for your home office.

The Nature of Cheap Roman Shades

Posted on April 28th, 2010 in Blinds & Shades | 2 Comments »

One of the most intriguing and elegant pieces of furniture (if you want to call them that – others call them window treatments) that you can add to your home are roman shades. For me, there’s nothing better than finding cheap roman shades and adding them to my home as if I paid the full retail price for them.

While you could argue that inexpensive roman shades are not hard to come by I would argue that most shades are relatively low priced, but if you ever saw cheap roman shades in a shop you’d probably be stunned! Because of this it seems that roman shades are becoming more and more popular in the home despite the fact that they’re hardly a new item (hint – the key is in the name). Perhaps this is due to the fact that you can now find cheap roman shades more and more easily today (due to the way they are mass produced) or perhaps it is down to the fact that they have come into fashion lately. Whatever it is, as more and more people buy these shades more and more will be made – again lowering the cost to manufacture and therefore the price which we are expected to pay.

As well as shades, cheap roman blinds have come into popularity since they allow you to accurately control the flow of light into a room as if it were water coming through a lock (as in the locks that control the height of a river). These are viable alternatives to cheap roman shades and should not be dismissed.

For whatever type of window you’ve got (whatever size and shape) you can always find a cheap roman shade to cover it (and to not only cover it but to give it an extra touch of class) such is the availability and range of roman shades on the market today.

Not only is there a larger selection of cheap roman shades on the market today but they are also easier to buy than ever. For the ‘traditionalists’ among us you can still go into and blind or shade shop and buy the items of your choice, but for those of us more willing to embrace new technology (and the inevitable changes that follow it) we can shop online at any of the hundreds of roman shades websites that have been set up in the past 10 years.

How to Clean a Leather Computer Chair

Posted on April 27th, 2010 in Chairs, Leather Furniture | 5 Comments »

Imagine the situation: You’ve just bought a brand new leather computer chair for your home office and you take a step back to admire it in all its glory. All of a sudden your five year old son comes running in covered in white paint (let’s say he’s been decorating with your wife) and plants them all over your nice new chair. Disaster? Maybe, but there are a few things that we can do to reduce and remove stains from leather computer chair – and I’ll show you how.

As with all furniture you always expect to have to do a little bit of maintenance to keep your leather computer chair clean. While due to the nature of leather these computer chairs are easier to keep clean and maintain, there is always the odd occasion when you (or someone else) might spill something on it giving you just a few precious minutes to act before the look of the leather office chair is ruined forever.

When many people are confronted with a stain on a leather computer chair they’ll often take a damp cloth to it. This isn’t a bad idea, but for stains that have breached the surface even a tiny bit they won’t work completely. Your best bet is to get an alcohol based fluid (such as white spirit), apply it to a damp cloth (or you can mix the white spirit with a bucket of water and then dip the cloth in) and gently rub the stain on your leather swivel chair.

This may a take a while, and you might have to apply a few ‘coats’ (i.e. you might have to let it dry and come back and try again). Once the stain is clear, give the area a quick rinse with a damp cloth. If white spirit does not clean your black leather chair you can always try using baby wipes. Bizarrely these seems to work on certain types of leather and many people have had great results with them.

Remember that you must never try and scratch a stain off as you’ll only end up scratching the leather. Be gentle and patient and you should be fine.

Should the worst happen and you can’t remove the stain you can always cut out that leather segment from your executive leather chair and have a new piece of leather sewn in its place at an upholstery shop. This is cheaper to do than you might think, and might just save you having to buy a new chair.

Installing Interior Door Handles

Posted on April 26th, 2010 in Accessories | No Comments »

Adding interior door handles to the doors in your home is something that requires immense precision, patience and a steady hand. It is also something that should not be undertaken if you’re not confident in what you’re doing and if you don’t know how to do it. The alternative here is that you hire someone out to do fit your door handles and door knobs (either a handy man or a door specialist). The problem here is that they’ll charge you and absolute fortune for doing what is actually a fairly simple job (in that it really requires no special skills or the use of any special tools). Fortunately, I will explain clearly here how to install interior door handles into your home so that you don’t have to pay the hefty costs of hiring someone to do it!

Let’s get down to the nitty gritty. The first thing to do is to obviously go out and buy the interior door handles that you want. Take time on this step and decide carefully whether you need cabinet door pull or actual door handles. Next, gather all of your tools together and to go to the room (and the door) that you want to work on and clear anything out of the way that might be an obstacle (I also find I work best when everyone else is out of the house).

Now depending on what kind of interior door handles you are installing the process from here on in is slightly different. For the sake of this article let’s assume that you are using door handles and not door knobs (knobs are actually a lot easier to install and you probably won’t need any help with them). You must now get your pencil out and draw a small circle on the door where you want each screw hole to go. A good way of doing this is to hold the interior door handle up to the door and scribble a small mark through the screw holes. This ensures that the marks that you draw are the correct distance apart.

Next, take a look at your screws and work out how deep your holes need to be. Get out an appropriately sized drill bit and attach it to your electric drill (always start small here) and drill the holes. One done, place the interior door handles in place and twist the screws in by hand. Make sure you have all of the screws in before you tighten them up. Voila! You now have a working interior door handle!

Why You Need a Wall Wine Rack

Posted on April 25th, 2010 in Accessories | 1 Comment »

If you like to drink wine at home and consider yourself to be a bit of a wine connoisseur than you need to get yourself a wall wine rack (if you haven’t already).

The great thing about wine is that it can be stored for a long time (sometimes up to and beyond 10 years) meaning that you don’t have to drink it right away and that you can stock up on your favourite bottles (from your favourite year that they were made) and keep them in your possession for drinking on special occasions.

While you can store wine for this long, if you don’t keep it properly it is likely to go sour and bad. That’s where the wall wine rack comes in. Because wine must be kept on its side you can’t store it in a cupboard or on a shelf. The thing about a wall mounted wine rack is that it is designed with the sole purpose of keeping wine on its side. They are made usually from plastic, wood or metal and have isometric squares in a diagonal formation that allow you to hold as much wine as possible in their short area.

Wherever you decide to have your wall hanging wine rack is fine, since you can easily nail it onto any wall (whether it be the kitchen, the garage, the cellar, the dining room or any other room in the home). While you may not currently have the room to store wine in your home (or so you think), using a wall wine rack can open up currently unused spaces and give you extra storage room.

When choosing a wall wine rack you need to think about how much money you’ve got to spend, how much wine you want to store and where it’s going to go in your home (since this dictates how big it can be and what kind of look you want it to have).

When browsing online for wall hanging wine racks you’ll no doubt realize that there are several different styles and shapes available. While each separate unit (i.e. each part that holds the bottle) is usually the same  the way that these are all arranged and put together can be different. Sometimes you’ll see them in a square shape, sometimes a circle and so on. It’s even been mentioned on several wine websites that if you send your size specifications of what you want your wall wine rack to be they can custom make one to fit into your room however you need it.

What are Picture Frame Mouldings? A General Guide

Posted on April 24th, 2010 in Accessories | 4 Comments »

If you’re reading this you might be asking yourself ‘what are picture frame mouldings?’ Picture frame moulding is something that goes around the edge of a picture (like a picture frame). While ordinary picture frames have been used for years, there’s a new kind of frame (i.e. picture frame moulding) that has recently come into popularity.

The job of any picture frame is two things: To protect the picture frame and to accentuate the picture and make it look nice (which Is why most frames are engraved and have patterns on them). It seems that in this ‘new’ green world that we live in people are always trying to find ways to save the environment. This is why the picture frame moulding has come into fruition, since it is actually more environmentally friendly.

There are essentially 2 different types of picture frame moulding that you can get: wooden and metal. Both have extremely different looks You’ll often find metal picture frame mouldings in art galleries since they are more subtle and because they last forever (or for as long as you’d ever need one for anyway!)

These days (unlike a few years ago) picture frame mouldings can be bought from all art stores as well as most home DIY stores. If there isn’t any of these kinds of shops near you (or if you have an odd sized picture that requires a specialized frame) than you can go online and shop on one of the many picture frame sites that have been set up in the last couple of years. The choice that you have when buying these is that you can buy a frame set (which you have to make yourself) or you can pay to get your picture put into the frame moulding which you can then collect.

Once you’ve found the picture frames moulding that you like you need to get a front screen panel to go over it (just like you have with a picture frame). These can be made from glass, acrylic or other types of clear materials, and the goal of it is to protect the picture (where the picture frame moulding holds the picture the screen is the part that protects it).

The great things about hanging a picture or a photo on a picture frame moulding is that you can get it made at a shop or you can hang it yourself. This is a really fun thing to do and is a something that you can take the time to do with your family.

Window Valances For the Home Interior

Posted on April 24th, 2010 in Window Treatments | 1 Comment »

You have probably seen by now the many ways in which you can dress up your windows, since window treatments come in many shapes, styles, fabrics and materials. Some of the more popular ones include things like curtains, blinds and valances.  Window valances are some of the more simple ways to dramatically alter the look of your windows, and they can be extremely cost effective as well (due to their simplicity).  Let’s get into some of the ideas regarding these products and some ideas that may help you to see what is possible in your own home…

To begin with, you must know that you can use a valance over existing blinds or curtains without the need to replace them.  Custom valances can be created for most any window and home décor. While youll pay more for custom pieces such as these, if you value the look of your home’s interior the interior, sometimes you just have to invest in what will give you the greatest look.

There are kits that you can buy to do this yourself if you are more of a DIY type or home decorating enthusiast.  These are nothing more than foam-like pieces that can be mounted above and over your windows as your new valance.  They work by you selecting your fabric or fabrics and wrapping them in whichever way you like around that foam core.  Next, you just need to stick it and mount it as instructed.

Another option is to go with a window scarf valance.  These type of valances are simple, but can reveal an elegant looking window treatment when required and is especially true if your fabrics are made of a more luxurious fabric (like a velvet or silk).  How these scarf valances works (as the name implies) is that they are draped and hung around the curtain rod, giving it a scarf-like appeal.  It can be hung in a variety of ways to give you just the look you are after.  So, you see, there are several ways to go when you are contemplating what type of window valance to choose!
