What is an L Shaped Computer Desk?

Posted on March 31st, 2010 in Desks, Office Furniture | 10 Comments »

If you’re looking to buy a new desk for your home, office, bedroom (or wherever there’s a spare corner) look no further than getting an L shaped computer desk (also known as a corner computer desk). So what is an L shaped desk? It’s a desk that is fairly triangular in shape, where the top point of the triangle fits into the corner of your room, leaving you sitting facing the corner.

There are two main benefits to having an L shaped computer desk over an ‘ordinary’ computer desk (i.e. the kind that are rectangular shaped). The first of these is that you get the benefit of being able to fit it directly into the corner (because of the triangular shape and the right angle of it). This can often free up space in a room where that corner space might otherwise be wasted. The second benefit is that you can often actually have a bigger computer desk to work on without taking up any extra space in the room.

I personally love working on my L shaped computer desk because I sit in the middle (with my computer monitor, keyboard and mouse in the middle) and have space either side (to my left and right) on my corner computer desk with which to work in (I do a lot of manual handwriting whilst I’m on my computer so this additional space is perfect for that). Not having to constantly put books and papers away to clear space is such a time saver, and means that I can lay everything out how I want it, meaning I’m far more efficient and effective when I’m working.

Another, slightly unusual benefit of using an L shaped office desk is that because you’re primarily facing the corner of a wall, you’ll have far less distractions and you’ll be able to see far less going on around you. In some places this can really help to keep you focused, and is a good way of helping people to feel like they’re in their own mini-office (when they really aren’t).

When using L shaped computer desks in large offices you be less likely to have them in the corner of the room (since you might have dozens of employees all working in the same office but only 4 corners to the room). You can still make good use of a L shaped computer desk in this situation, and they can actually still be extremely useful in small areas where space is limited and desks have to fit into whatever space is available.

Cheap Office Furniture – A Godsend When Starting a New Business

Posted on March 31st, 2010 in Cheap Furniture, Office Furniture | 2 Comments »

In these times of financial difficulty, getting the most for your money is of the upmost importance. Starting a business is one of the most expensive things that you can do, and is something where you’re potentially risking losing a lot of money (if things don’t go well for you). In situations like these we all need to make the most of what we’ve got, and finding cheap office furniture is the start of this.

Whether you’re interested in buying cheap office furniture through necessity (because it’s all you can afford) or just because you are trying to cut back on costs (or because you don’t feel the need to spend more than you need to on modern office furniture), there are plenty of options and ways of acquiring cheap office furniture these days.

When buying inexpensive office furniture you basically have two choices – you can buy used furniture that is second hand or you can buy furniture that is discounted for some reason. There are many reasons why modern office furniture might be discounted – it might be part of a display, it might be the last of that line of stock (so the company wants to get rid of it quickly) or it might simply be not selling well. Often times furniture shops will have office furniture sales on, but the prices you’ll see in these sales will rarely save you as much money as the two ways I’ve just mentioned.

Furniture for offices is something that should be bought with careful consideration, no matter how cheap it is. Before buying you need to first work out how much you have to spend (i.e. your budget) before working out what you need and how much of it you need.  For example, if you’re opening an office you’ll most likely need a desk and an office chair for each person (at the very minimum). In addition to this you’ll also need some storage furniture, such as filing cabinets and multi-purpose shelving. Sometimes if you can’t find cheap office furniture you can find other ways to cut costs, such as getting one large desk for two people and getting them to share.

It’s important to keep a cool head when buying your cheap office furniture (sometimes the low prices can cause people to go a bit wild and spend all of their money!). Only buy what is necessary since you can always buy more inexpensive office furniture later should you need it.

The Correct Way To Buy Used Office Furniture

Posted on March 30th, 2010 in Office Furniture, Used Furniture | 3 Comments »

Furnishing an office is something that must be done in careful moderation. Too often I see companies who go all out and buy every single piece of office furniture that you could possibly ever need (all of it brand new, of course). Doing things this way is very, very expensive and you’ll never know how much executive office furniture you actually need till you experiment (obviously less furniture = cheaper for you). This is especially common where companies have been given venture capital or investor’s money to start up, since the person who’s buying the furniture doesn’t feel like he’s spending his own money.

One great way to get more for your money is to buy used office chairs (note that you can get used home office furniture as well as used executive furniture). The main difference between buying new and used office furniture is the price (obviously you’re more likely to get cheap office furniture if you buy it second or third hand).

The only problem with buying used office furniture is that you’re taking a bit of a gamble with the condition that it’s going to come in. This is why I strongly advise thoroughly inspecting each piece of used furniture before you buy it. Things to check for are rips in the fabric, any signs of structural damage, stains and general wear and tear. ‘Used office furniture’ is such a general term. If something has been sat on once it is technically ‘used’, just the same way that something that has been used every day in an office for 10 years is still classed as ‘used’. That being said, most of the time used office furniture looks brand new, and if it still had the plastic covering around it you’d think it was, so it’s nearly always better to try your luck and see if you can pick up a bargain on executive furniture.

It’s important to look at the amount of office space you have before buying used office furniture, since there’s nothing worse than buying more than you can fit in, or having to squash offices and people together to make use of it all. Take the time to walk around your empty office and visualize where everything will go. Next, get the measurements of the room and make a rough drawing of it, filling in where people’s desks will go to see how much used executive office furniture you can fit in. This means that you can buy furniture according to the size (meaning bigger offices = bigger furniture). Buying used office furniture is something that is easy when done right.

Why The Oak Desk Is The King Of The Desk World

Posted on March 30th, 2010 in Desks, Oak Furniture, Office Furniture | No Comments »

Buying an oak desk is not the same as buying any other kind of desk. For men it is almost a rite of passage. There’s definitely something special and beautifully masculine about a large oak desk (whether it be an oak office desk or oak computer desks). When I think of oak desks I think of the CEO of a company (or a James Bond villain) who is perched on a large rotating leather chair sat behind his magnificent desk.

If you do a lot of handwriting and work that isn’t done on a computer, oak writing desks might be your best choice. The reason for this is that they are extremely large and flat, giving you a lot of room to spread out all of your work on (I for one hate working on a small desk because I have to continually re-organize all of my papers).

So why are oak desks so popular? Wooden desks look and feel so much nicer than any other kind, and oak is the king of all the woods (think of a great big magnificent oak tree). In a more practical sense, the colour of an oak desk is such that it fits in with almost any kind of style and colour patter that your room might have. In addition to this, an oak desk is one of the sturdiest items of office or home furniture that you can buy, since oak is a supremely strong and tough wood. Because of this a solid oak desk is something that will

Most large desks (such as a typical antique oak desk) are made from oak for the reason that having a large desk is a lot cheaper and easier if it’s made from oak (partly because the trees are so big so they can have these large slabs of wood and partly because the wood is strong enough to stretch across a wide area). For this reason the style of the typical oak office desk hasn’t changed very much in recent years.

There are a few different types of oak desk, such as the oak computer desks (which is much like a writing desk but with special spaces laid out for all your computer equipment) and the corner oak desk. Corner desks are (obviously) desks that were designed to fit in a corner. Because of this, they are very often a near triangular shape, with the point of the triangle fitting against the corner of the room. These corner oak desks are great because they give you a full 90 degrees to work on, and they often don’t take up that much space in a room because they can fit right into the corner.

Buying Your First Glass Dining Table

Posted on March 30th, 2010 in Dining Room Furniture, Tables | 1 Comment »

In life, there are certain materials that transcend the normal and have a special kind of quality about them. Glass is one of those things, and that’s why glass dining tables can be the perfect kind of dining tables for a modern home. A glass dining table is not made entirely of glass – the legs are often made of wood (or occasionally plastic or metal) and it is only the top surface that is made from glass (they might better be called glass top dining tables because of this).

Because glass can be a fairly fragile material, I wouldn’t recommend getting a glass top dining table if you have young children, since they like to bang on table tops and as well as breaking it they might cut themselves on some glass. This does not mean to say that glass dining tables are weak by any means (and if used properly you will never have any problems with them), just that you should take precautions.

There are 2 main types of glass dining tables that you can buy – each with its own unique and special qualities. While there are several different styles (such as the extending glass dining table which can shrink or extend to suit the amount of people it is needed to sit, and round glass dining tables) that you can get; glass insert tables and glass top dining tables. The former has a main structure that is made from metal or plastic (usually) and just has a sheet of glass slid into the inside top part of the table (so the main top is made from glass, but the outside rim is made from another material).

The latter glass dining table mentioned is where you have a base made from another material (the same as before) but the glass top rests on top of it. This second kind looks a lot more stylish and pretty, and is definitely the better of the two.

Before deciding what kind of glass dining table you want, first think about how the dining table will fit in with the rest of the room (i.e. how will it match the style and look of the dining room?). Note that to go along with your glass dining table you can also get glass dining table chairs, so if you’re re-doing your dining room it might be worth looking at glass dining table sets.

Things to Consider When Buying Dining Room Chairs

Posted on March 29th, 2010 in Chairs, Dining Room Furniture | 7 Comments »

For most people their dining room is the most elegant room in the house. When I say the ‘most elegant’ I don’t mean the prettiest or the nicest, but the one with the most class and sophistication. For example, the dining room is the room in the house where most people choose to display their finest china, plates and crystal (usually in some kind of large cabinet). It is also the home of the dining room table (which is often a work of art in itself, if made from dark wood such as mahogany) and of course; dining room chairs.

Buying dining room furniture (and dining room chairs in particular) is something that requires more care and attention than you might think. For example, you can’t (well you can, but you shouldn’t) just go out to a furniture shop (such as IKEA or Pottery Barn) and buy the nicest dining room tables and chairs that you see – you need to think about how they will fit in with the style of your dining room and how they’ll compliment (or not compliment) it. This is perhaps the most important thing to think about. If, however, you find a set of dining room chairs that you just can’t live without it might be worth buying them and then changing the style of your dining room to match these. There are lots of different styles available, from leather dining chairs to oak dining chairs, so ultimately, it’s up to you!

For most people, dining room chairs must not only be comfortable to sit on but must also look nice and fit the demeanor of the room (and must also match the table). It is a good idea to buy all of your dining room furniture in one go (i.e. buying your dining table and chairs at the same time) instead of separately so that you can get a dining room set that matches. There’s nothing worse than seeing dining room chairs that don’t match the dining room table they are linked with.

Another thing to consider when buying a dining table and chairs (also commonly known as a dining table set) is whether you want dining chairs with arms or not. In many dining room sets you can get a mixture of chairs with and without arms (traditionally, the two chairs at either end of the table have arms on them and the ones in the middle do not). After this you want to think about what kind of material(s) you want your dining room chairs to be made from. 99% of the time it’s best to get wood dining room chairs (and I always think dark woods look the nicest).

The Importance of Reception Furniture

Posted on March 25th, 2010 in Desks, Office Furniture | 1 Comment »

When running an (or starting up a new) office the reception furniture that you have should be one of the most important and first things that you think about.

Your reception area should be a sacred place that is kept in tip-top condition at all times (both in terms of cleanliness and in terms of the reception office furniture that you have in there). The reason for this is that your reception is the place that every outside person (i.e. someone that does not work for your company) will see when they first enter your offices. We all know the importance of making good first impressions (and that you only have one chance to make a good first impression), so in order to make a good first impression you need to have a nice reception area and nice reception room furniture to match.

It is often said that your reception furniture reflects the inner nature, the hidden aspects and the desires of your business. It is your bosses (or whomever chose the reception furniture’s) inner thoughts and feelings towards your business coming out in the form of furniture. People will interpret these thought (often subconsciously), and while they might not mean much, in the world of business even a small advantage can often make the difference, so why not make the effort and invest in some reception area furniture (such as a nice new reception area furniture desk)?

Many people consider the reception desk to be the key piece of furniture in this area, and they’re right. Your reception desk should be large and multi-sided (i.e. in the shape of a horse shoe, giving the person behind it more room). That being said, the main desk isn’t the only piece that should be in this area, as you should also have a few other pieces of reception room furniture, such as comfortable chairs for potential clients or business associates to sit on. Remember, your reception area is a place where often people coming into the building will have to sit and wait at for a short while, so it’s important to make it a comfortable, warm and inviting area.

Some reception areas don’t have any reception room furniture at all! If this is the case for your business, make sure you get something in quickly, even if it’s used reception furniture that you buy on the cheap as that’s still better than nothing.
